Eye Examinations

An eye examination measures the clarity and comfort of your vision, as well as assesses the health of your eyes.

In an examination, Optometrist Heather Law will ask you about your general health, any vision issues or problems you’ve had and your current prescription, if applicable. She will then use a series of tests to work out if you need corrective lenses or any other interventions.

Eye examination tests include:

  • checks to make sure your eyes are working correctly together and to assess your ability to focus
  • a careful examination of both the internal and external structures of your eyes. Heather will also look for signs of cataract, glaucoma or macular degeneration, and other diseases like high blood pressure and diabetes
  • assessments of the pressure within the eye, fields of view and colour vision, if indicated.

If Heather detects any abnormalities, she can initiate appropriate treatment or refer you to an ophthalmologist or other health professional.

In some cases, Heather may conduct further tests, including:

  • retinal photography – provides a digital image of the internal structures of the eye
  • visual field testing – a computerised method of establishing and recording the eye’s field of vision
  • dilated fundus examination – uses drops to enlarge the pupil so Heather can examine the retina more closely.

We recommend you have a routine eye examination every two years. Attending regular checkups means Heather can detect any vision issues early, enabling prompt treatment to control the disease and prevent vision loss. Some conditions, like diabetes, require more frequent examinations and Heather will advise you if this is necessary.

We will send you a reminder when your next examination is due.
